About Us
Matilda Veneer Pty Ltd is the creation of husband and wife team, Robert and Meryl Filip.
At age 39, having worked for Hancock Brothers since the age of fifteen from his initial role as floor sweeper through the ranks to eventually becoming the company’s general manager, Robert decided he wanted to do more in the industry.
Sliced veneer is Robert’s passion and in 1988, when the Hancock Brothers Cairns factory closed due to World Heritage Listing of the North Queensland Rainforest, Robert became aware of a unique opportunity.
Upon hearing that Hancock Brothers were going to sell the sliced veneer line overseas, he approached them about purchasing the machinery to keep it within Australia. They agreed and Matilda Veneer Pty Ltd was born.
This venture saw Robert and Meryl relocate to Ipswich and Matilda Veneer Pty Ltd was officially formed in June, 1990.
Given it is a family owned and operated business, the name Matilda Veneer Pty Ltd bears a great deal of significance because Matilda is Robert's mothers name and also encapsulates the Australian spirit. During the early stages, the business operated from rented space within the Hancock Brothers Ipswich plant. In January 1994, the slicing line was sold enabling the purchase of a factory at 19 Activity Crescent, Molendinar in Queensland. The business was relocated to the new premises which saw Matilda Veneer Pty Ltd become distributors of sliced veneer and timber.
In August 1998, Matilda Veneer Pty Ltd had outgrown the premises at 19 Activity Crescent, Molendinar which saw the purchase of 20 Activity Crescent, where we operate from today.
Since its inception in 1988, Matilda Veneer has supplied veneer and timber to many prestigious jobs including:
-
The Sydney Opera House;
-
Brisbane Law Courts; and
-
The supply of Queensland Maple sawn timber for the refurbishment of St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney prior to the visit of the Pope in August, 2008.
During the early years Matilda only specialised in North Queensland species of timber being harvested from private property. Today, due to the diminishing supply of timber from privately owned properties, Matilda now source a more diverse range of materials from such countries as Chile, New Guinea, China and the Solomon Islands.
